Ned thinks his professor of the occult, Avery Grant, is being haunted. At first, Avery just thinks Ned has a crush on her and he does have a hidden agenda - he wants to be her TA so that he can have access to the Copeland Library Wing where the Book of Changes was first found. She tries to get Ned to leave her alone but when he sees these strange happenings, he enlists Melinda’s and Eli’s help to figure out who the ghost is. Eli tells them Avery used to have a fiance but he was tragically killed in a car accident so they’re led to believe the ghost is her fiance Curtis. When Avery keeps running into the same man, Brian, in a series of accidents, she starts to think Curtis is still with her. Ned uses a Ouji board to try to contact the ghost but all he seems to get are a number of other ghosts desperate to make a connection. Avery runs into Brian again and finds he experienced a devastating loss like she did - his daughter, Madison was killed in a car accident when they were driving together. They discover that Curtis was the other driver of the car - he hit Brian and his daughter, killing himself and Madison. Melinda finally gets a glimpse of the ghost - it is indeed Madison, Brian’s daughter who didn’t die instantly from the crash but a week later from a brain embolism. Avery, so distraught, drives to the crash site, a place where she set up a memorial for Curtis but she’s reckless on the curves and the car runs off the road. Brian, also driving to the site, finds her and saves her. Melinda and Eli catch up and are finally able to figure out all that Madison wanted was for her father to have a connection with someone - for her death to finally mean something and he would meet another person and be able to move forward. Melinda crosses her over and Brian and Avery agree to explore their new found relationship. Melinda is concerned when the Ouji board gives her a message that someone they know is going to die soon.

Living Nightmare - Episode 513

A strange man stumbles into the hospital covered in blood. He’s scared and seems as though he isn’t quite aware what’s going on only that some man with a knife was chasing after him. Jim quickly takes charge as Melinda, at the hospital visiting Jim, sees a male ghost who warns her that nothing they do will help or save him. “He’s a dead man.” The hospital identifies the man as Robert Wharton and they discover that although the blood on him was his, his injuries were minor - no brutal knife slashings as he was afraid of. When Jim tries to talk with Robert, he once again is unsure of what’s happening to him, what he’s seen or what he’s done. He keeps having images of a woman being slashed but he can’t remember anything. The only thing that is sure is that Robert doesn’t seem to be able to fall asleep. The male ghost visits Melinda again and she, Eli and Ned try to figure out what’s going on. They finally locate Robert’s girlfriend and father. His girlfriend had been very worried about him, having seen a change come over him in the last few weeks where Robert had been agitated and acting strangely. His father admits that Robert was adopted and Melinda discovers the male ghost who’s been haunting around is Robert’s real father. He’s staying close to Robert and keeping him from sleeping. From his medical records, they find that Robert may have inherited a fatal disease from his father called Fatal Familial Insomnia which renders the body incapable of falling asleep. Robert’s father had it and had started to see “demons”. When his mother tired to help, his father killed her, slashing her with the aforementioned knife in Robert’s visions. The hospital does tests on Robert and they discover he doesn’t have the disease and the “demons” that Robert’s father’s ghost was fearful of were not going to harm him. His ghost found peace thanks to Melinda, and Robert was finally able to get some sleep.

Blessings In Disguise - Episode 512

A family who is new in town, with a daughter Ned is attracted to, starts behaving strangely. They seem to be hiding from someone — and not just the ghost that’s haunting them. When Melinda discovers the truth, buried deep in the family’s past, it threatens to tear apart not only the family, but a young couple just falling in love. The Walker family is new in town and they’re renting a house through one of Delia’s listings. She starts to suspect something rather strange when they get cagey about inviting Delia and Melinda inside. When the son is strangely attacked by flying sodas from a vending machine, Melinda believes a ghost is responsible and is even more suspicious when the family simply tries to ignore it. Delving deeper, Delia discovers the family has no past credit history and they begin to suspect the family is hiding something or hiding from something. Melinda discovers the parents used to be members of an environmental activist group and during their last big stand, a man was killed. This is the ghost that’s haunting the family, believing the father, Glenn Blessing, was responsible for his death. The family has been in hiding ever since. But the growing attraction between Ned and the daughter, Katie, helps him to convince her to let Melinda help deal with the ghost part. Unfortunately, the family doesn’t see it that way and goes on the run with the police in hot pursuit. At the standoff, the father finally relents and Melinda is able to get the facts straight between Glenn and the ghost with what really happened. The ghost is crossed over and Glenn is arrested but no longer with the charge of murder. The family can finally stop running and Ned and Katie can have a chance at love.

Ned’s college radio show brings an old radio prank to life and a ghost that died from it, when they discover the prank was a script that was something that actually happened 8 years before word for word. The old DJ had a set up where a husband called his wife to break up with her with the promise of winning a Bahamas vacation. Ned discovers this when strange things start happening to the station and the actual wife from the original prank comes to yell at them. Melinda finds her husband, Jack, who originally made the call. Jack claims his wife, Maggie, knew it was a prank but she was already riddled with doubts about his fidelity. She wouldn’t let up in asking him who the other woman was and he finally said he was leaving her for a coworker from his office, Daisy. Jack insists he was faithful but when Melinda talks to him she discovers that he is indeed married to Daisy, having divorced his first wife, Maggie. He says that they did go on the trip but their marriage was never the same after that call. Melinda suspects the ghost is the former fiancee of Daisy’s who disappeared without a trace. Daisy insists she never cheated on her fiancee, Bruce, and only got together with Jack months and months later. Upon further prodding, Melinda discovers that Maggie was convinced something was going on with Jack and Daisy so when he named Daisy on the radio show, it only confirmed her suspicions. She called Bruce to let him know that Jack and Daisy were on their way to a Bahamas vacation so he immediately got in his car to try and stop them. The roads were treacherous and his car went off a cliff into the water. Melinda crosses Bruce over after straightening out the misunderstanding.

Excessive Forces - Episode 510

Melinda suspects a police officer might be more involved than he’s letting on in a Grandview high school kid’s accidental death. She becomes even more suspicious after question the officer, Ramsey, and then finds her car towed and stripped for a drug search after she sees Ramsey talking to the tow company. She meets Office Ramsey’s daughter and is thrown into a vision where she sees the kid, Dylan Hale, being struck in the head with some kind of stick. The daughter, Anne-Marie, doesn’t want to talk to Melinda and runs away. Undeterred, Melinda and Eli dig deeper, with help from the school’s guidance counselor, and they discover that Anne-Marie was seeing another kid, Jake Olmstead, much to her father, Officer Ramsey’s disapproval. Melinda is thrown into another vision when she tries to talk with Jake and sees vandalism being done and she suspects that Officer Ramsey was the victim of the vandalism. When she finds out that Ramsey is looking into Dylan Hale’s death, Melinda believes that his daughter and Jake might know more than they are letting on. In talking to Jake’s mom, she out that Dylan was staying with the Olmstead’s, having been kicked out by his drunken father. Dylan and Jake weren’t good friends but he found out about the threats that Officer Ramsey made to Jake about staying away from his daughter. Dylan proceeded to play mailbox baseball with the officer’s mailbox in retaliation. Jake and Anne-Marie found this out one night when they were all driving home together from a party. Anne-Marie, incensed about her father, wanted Jake to take a swing at the mailbox himself. Jake finally agreed but when he took a swing at it, it bounced right off and cracked Dylan in the head. Sick of being vandalized, Officer Ramsey had reinforced his mailbox with cement, not knowing that this would be the direct cause of Jake’s baseball hitting Dylan and causing his death. Melinda reunites Officer Ramsey, Anne-Marie, Jake and Dylan and all is forgiven about this tragic accident.

Lost In The Shadows - Episode 509

Melinda discovers Julia, the girl who was living in the hospital dying from leukemia, hiding in Aiden’s closet, now a ghost. Suspicious of her, Melinda demands that Julia leave and she can help her crossover. But Julia refuses, only wanting to talk to Aiden. She threatens Melinda fearfully with “You don’t know who you’re dealing with.” Melinda and Jim talk to Julia’s parents, to find out more about her. They say she pushed them away in the end but she kept a lot of journals. They promised to look through them to see if there’s something helpful in there to help her crossover. That night, Melinda has a terrible vision she poisons Aiden and when she goes to his room, she discovers he’s not there. Frantic, Melinda and Jim start a search party for their 5-year-old taken by a little girl ghost. Julia takes Aiden into the woods to a long-abandoned train museum/playground. Julia is nervous and frightened and just wants to be in a safe place. The “Shadows” begin to close in on her but Aiden saves her by using his flashlight to chase the Shadows away. Meanwhile, Julia’s parents reveal, from the journals, that Julia blamed herself for the death of her friend, believing she caused it by giving her a “potion” she concocted, trying to make her better. Melinda and Jim catch up to Aiend and Julia. She reunites Julia with her parents and Julia discovers she had nothing to do with her friend’s death - her friend, sadly, was sicker than her parents ever let on. Melinda crosses Julia into the light and she, Jim and Aiden go home, safe and protected at least for now.

Dead Listing - Episode 508

Melinda is visited by the ghost of a recently deceased real estate mogul, Kirk Jansen. He’s convinced his wife, Rita, who’s also his real estate partner, was responsible. Melinda delves into their relationship and finds a feud between them that rivals the War of the Roses. Before Kirk’s death, they both made steps toward a truce. Rita bought a building for a bakery they always dreamed to have but she had no idea it had mold inside that Kirk was deathly allergic to. Kirk went to the building with an award he received, having added her name to the engraving. He dropped it through the wooden slats and, in trying to retrieve it, succumbed to the mold and died. Before Melinda can straighten things out between them, Rita destroys all of his possessions and electrocutes herself in the process. With Melinda’s help, they reconcile and cross over. Connor is using ghosts to impress his friends with magic tricks. We discover in the end, he’s also hiding the sick little girl from the hospital, Julia Miller, in his closet.

Devil’s Bargain - Episode 507

Jim is devastated when a female teenage patient of his dies unexpectedly during a simple surgery. When he and the senior attending, Dr. Morgan, seem to get haunted after the procedure, Jim is sure it’s his patient. Melinda discovers through a vision its actually Tina Clark, a medical school classmate of Jim’s and Dr. Morgan’s old TA. In her vision, Melinda got the impression that they were having an affair and the newspapers have reported her missing. When Jim tries to ask Dr. Morgan about her, Dr. Morgan clams up. Through a dream, Melinda discovers Tina worked as a stripper to make money to help her through medical school. When she and Jim question one of the strippers, they discover that Tina was seen with President Bedford, the president of Rockland U. According to Dr. Morgan, who finally admits to his relationship with Tina but having no idea what happened to her, President Bedford was the only one who knew about their affair and encouraged Morgan to break it off and not jeopardize his chance at the presidency for Rockland. Tina ran away but news of their relationship camp out and Bedford replaced Morgan as the top candidate for the job. When Eli confronts Bedford, already angry and sick of the way Bedford has always abusively treated him, Bedford admits to his attitude toward Eli all being an act. He’d been trying to protect him and Melinda from the Shadows who are really pulling the strings with the series of events. Melinda gets increasingly worried about these so-called all powerful Shadows as she can feel them but can’t see them or hear them. She suddenly feels helpless and concerned about their power as even The Book of Changes erased all mention of them in fear.

Head Over Heels - Episode 506

It’s Halloween time. It seems as though the Headless Horseman from the Legend of Sleepy Hollow is haunting Melinda. The book shows up mysteriously at Aidan’s school. Caroline, Aidan’s teacher, comes by the shop to drop off some things from her parent’s house as her father died recently and they are now selling the house. Melinda sees a riding gear in one of the boxes and is thrown into a memory of a Halloween costume party from years before with Caroline’s family. She sees to masked people sneak off together and then sees a cloaked man. Talking with both Caroline and her sister, Dana, Melinda finds out that her father died of Alzheimer’s and was haunted by horses, creatures he truly loved. When Melinda is thrown into another memory and visited again by the headless horseman, she looks deeper into the family and discovers a Sean Flanders who was thrown from a horse and later died. She discovers Caroline and Sean were in love and were going to run away together, but the night of this party he was accused of stealing. He ran away on a horse and was thrown. Melinda gets another vision and begins to suspect that Sean was set up, even though he was “seen” by Dana. It turns out, through some costume switching, their father was the one who set up Sean because he hated him. Through Melinda, Sean and Caroline reconcile and he reveals he saw her father leave but only part of him went into the light. Melinda is worried about Aidan’s ghost “friends” when he tells her they’re frightened of the shadows that are made of broken people.

Cause For Alarm - Episode 505

Melinda helps one of Eli’s new patients, the uber wealthy, obsessive compulsive, cute 40-something internet maven NATHAN WEISS. He locks himself in a safe room in his mansion every night because he feels he’s being watched and someone’s out to get him. This is only exacerbated by the security cameras that show him areas where security has been breached but no one shows up on the camera. Nathan thinks he’s being haunted by his sister’s ghost. who was kidnapped & killed when they were younger. Melinda discovers he’s actually being haunted by the ghost of an old girlfriend, Amy, he had before he was famous. The relationship ended abruptly and Nathan would never talk about it. He became a recluse, diving into his work. Melinda and Delia look Amy up and discover she died recently from breast cancer, very much in debt and was survived by her husband and 21-year-old son, Garrett, a brilliant MIT grad. Melinda suspects that the son is really Nathan’s but when they ask him about it, he has no idea what they’re talking about. Amy finally shows herself to Melinda and explains that Garrett only found out about his real father after she died and feels that Nathan abandoned him and his mother. They figure out that Garrett got himself hired by Nathan’s company to do something to get back at his father. Melinda and Nathan try to find Garrett while Garrett himself is working on releasing Nathan’s secret security software to the public free of charge. In doing this, he unwittingly locks Melinda and Nathan in the panic room and releases a poisonous gas. When Garrett discovers this, he saves both Melinda and Nathan and Amy brings both her son and his father together, telling them how she tried to keep them from each other. Melinda crosses Amy over having reconciled everyone. Melinda and Jim are concerned even more when Aiden talks about his shiny friends that aren’t ghosts but something else.
